Radiation therapy is an effective option for non-cancerous conditions including keloid scars.

Keloid scars are an overgrowth of scar tissue, and are often larger than the original wound itself. While they are not a health concern, you may want to have these scars removed for cosmetic reasons. The specialists at Ackerman Cancer Center are experienced in removing keloid scars with radiation.

Treatments

Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for keloids, alone or in combination with surgery. Radiation delivered immediately after surgical scar removal has been shown to successfully reduce keloid recurrence in up to 92% of cases.

Patients at Ackerman Cancer Center have access to some of the most advanced radiation technology available, including:

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy that allows a higher dose of radiation to be delivered directly to the scar, the area near it, or the site following scar removal. This approach helps protect surrounding healthy tissue. Types of brachytherapy performed at Ackerman Cancer Center include prostate seed implants, Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) and Valencia® for skin cancer.

The Center’s board-certified radiation oncologists and medical oncologists will carefully consider your unique needs when designing a keloid treatment plan.
