Understanding Gynecological Cancer
Gynecological cancer encompasses several types of cancers affecting the female reproductive organs. These cancers include:
- Ovarian Cancer
- Uterine Cancer
- Cervical Cancer
- Vulvar Cancer
- Vaginal Cancers
All women are at risk for these cancers, with significant risk factors including age, family history, and obesity.
- Cervical Cancer: Risk notably increases after age 30.
- Ovarian Cancer: Risk increases after age 50.
Family history plays a crucial role, particularly for ovarian and endometrial cancers. Having first-degree relatives (mothers or sisters) with these cancers can significantly elevate your risk, often due to inherited genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2.
Obesity is another important risk factor to consider. Excess body fat raises estrogen levels, which can increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Additionally, obesity can affect hormone levels and cause inflammation, further elevating the risk of ovarian cancer.
Regular screenings are crucial to aid in the early detection of gynecological cancers. At age 21, women should begin seeing a gynecologist regularly and having a Pap test conducted at least every three years for those at average risk. Women aged 30 and older, are recommended to combine their routine Pap tests with HPV testing every five years. At age 65 or older screening may no longer be necessary, if one has had at least three normal Pap tests and two negative HPV tests in the past 10 years.
